Any ideas as to why my pool is leaking inconsistently?

I have a 33' round above ground pool that seems to be leaking inconsistently. Under certain circumstances, such as when the water level drops far enough below the fill line or sometimes when I turn on the filter, the water starts draining at a rate of about two inches a day. A puddle of pool water appears on the edge, but not always in the same place.
